Live Kidney Donor Programme

Who Can Donate a Kidney?

Generally, a close relative, spouse, partner, or close friend who has demonstrated a longstanding emotional relationship can consider becoming a donor. Donors are usually brothers, sisters or parents of the patient. Less often donors are other close relatives such as uncles, aunts, grandparents, sons or daughters.

A donor must be over 21 years of age. Prior to consideration for live donation the potential recipient must be approved and deemed fit for transplant surgery.

This booklet helps prospective live donors and their families learn about the risks, benefits, investigations, procedure and follow-up associated with donating a kidney.

For further information, please contact the Transplant Co-ordinator, Beaumont Hospital, at (01) 809 2759 or (01) 809 2298.
