The Gastroenterology & Hepatology Department of Beaumont Hospital provides high quality, patient-oriented care across a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders. In addition to general gastroenterology clinics, our team of dedicated consultants, non-consultant hospital doctors, clinical nurse specialists and advanced nurse practitioners perform general and advanced endoscopic procedures, deliver complex medical care and advance clinical research for our patients.
Referrals to the gastroenterology and hepatology department can be sent by primary and secondary care practitioners via Healthlink. Alternatively, referrals can be sent to the gastroenterology administration office at gastroenterologyadmin@beaumont.ie or by post.
The endoscopy department performs thousands of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures each year in an ambulatory setting. The department also performs a large volume of urgent inpatient endoscopy procedures. Our expert endoscopists also perform critical cancer staging procedures and treatment of early cancers for patients with gastrointestinal cancers. This service is integrated with the oncology and surgical teams in Beaumont Hospital and nationally to deliver multi-disciplinary cancer care.
Beaumont hospital is also a national referral centre for complex colonic polyps, where our endoscopists use advanced techniques such as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) to safely remove precancerous and early cancerous lesions of the GI tract without the need for surgery. Beaumont Hospital was the first centre in Ireland to offer ESD, and currently has one dedicated list per week to provide this service.
Beaumont Hospital provides a tertiary referral service for ERCP, including advanced procedures such as cholangioscopy and lithotripsy. Both diagnostic and therapeutic EUS are also performed, for diagnosis and sampling of biliary, pancreatic, and liver pathology. The team also provides advanced EUS therapeutics including EUS guided bile duct and gallbladder drainage, pancreatic cyst management, and gastro-jejunostomy. The unit performs approximately 650 ERCP and 400 EUS procedures per year. Beaumont Hospital, along with St. Vincents Hospital, is proud to offer the only funded, RCPI approved, post CSCST advanced endoscopy fellowship in the country.
The Beaumont IBD unit is a tertiary referral center for the management of IBD. Our internationally trained and published consultants work with clinical nurse specialists, advanced nurse practitioners and clinical researchers to deliver holistic care for patients with IBD. This includes the management of complex cases, in concert with our surgical colleagues and the use of biologic and advanced therapies to improve outcomes and quality of life.
We also provide sub-specialty clinics for patients transitioning from paediatric tertiary referral IBD clinics, led by consultants with expertise in adolescent IBD. Beaumont is one of the first centers in Ireland to integrate intestinal ultrasound into routine clinical care for IBD patients. This is delivered at the point of care to assess symptoms and expedite therapeutic decisions.
Translational and clinical research are an integral part of our service. There is an active clinical trials team, affording our IBD patients the opportunity to avail of novel treatments. Our consultants collaborate closely with basic and translational researchers through RCSI to progress IBD care.
The Beaumont Hepatology unit comprises a team of expert consultants together with advanced nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists, offering general hepatology and sub-specialty care. This includes specialty virology clinics (Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C), autoimmune hepatitis management and metabolic liver disease assessment. The Liver Support clinic co-ordinates the complex needs of patients with advanced chronic liver disease, including day case procedures, nurse outreach and expert pharmacy consultation.
