Michael's Detoxification Unit is a specialist inpatient facility providing safe, structured care for individuals undergoing withdrawal from drugs and alcohol. The primary goal is to medically manage withdrawal symptoms, ensure safety and lay the foundation for further treatment and recovery.
The ward operates under the supervision of Consultant Psychiatrist in addictions Professor Fiona Fenton, who has responsibility for patient care plans, medical oversight, and complex case management.
Day to day operations are managed by nursing staff, who are present 24/7. A Psychiatry Registrar performs medical reviews and helps to manage complex psychiatric or medical needs. A Counsellor provides individual and group counselling and with the nursing staff, delivers a psycho-social programme during the three or four week stay.
Referrals are made through the HSE National Drug Treatment Centre in Pearse Street where assessments are done. An emphasis is placed on ongoing rehabilitation and nursing staff have excellent contacts with the community addiction service which provide ongoing supports and rehabilitation following discharge.
