Facial Palsy Service

Facial palsy is an injury of the facial nerve, which can result in temporary or permanent weakness of the muscles of facial expression on the affected side. Injury to this nerve can occur secondary to tumours or trauma to the nerve. Injury to this nerve can also occur from viral infections or when no cause can be established, Bell’s palsy.


We have a dedicated facial palsy clinic which takes place every 3 months. We are happy to receive referrals for patients as outlined below.

Surgical Services provided:

  • Facial nerve reinnervation
  • Facial nerve reanimation
  • Eyelid Surgery
  • Static symmetrisation
  • Selective myotomy and neurectomy

Medical Services provided:

  • Botulinum toxin injections and physiotherapy for synkinesis

As a result of the varied cause of this condition, we work with a wide variety of specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with facial palsy, GPs, Emergency Departments, ENT specialists, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery, Physiotherapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and community rehabilitation services.


Referral Information

Referral is indicated for patients with deficits post:

  • Tumour resection
  • Trauma
  • Diagnosed Bell’s palsy – Synkinesis >6/12 from onset of symptoms; with a normal MRI brain
  • Stroke
  • Iatrogenic injury
