Haematology crosses both the medical directorate and the clinical directorate of laboratory medicine. The clinical service comprises general haematology and coagulation haematology services.
The Haematology Day Unit called the Colman K Byrnes Unit (CKB), provides chemotherapy administration, assessment and supportive care to haematology oncology outpatients and to others with haematology conditions.
Haematology outpatient clinics take place in either the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) Building or in the outpatient department in the main hospital building. The Anticoagulant Monitoring Service (also known as the Warfarin Clinic) is also overseen by the haematology service
In CKB our nurses and doctors treat a wide variety of blood and bone marrow conditions. You will attend CKB for medical or nursing review, blood tests, procedures and/or treatments.
The CKB Haematology Day Ward is located on the 2nd floor of Beaumont Hospital. The haematology inpatient unit is located in Teresa’s Ward on the ground floor of the hospital.
Our anticoagulation monitoring service (or Warfarin Clinic) provides monitoring and advice for patients who are taking anticoagulant medications. The service is nurse-led, under the supervision of a consultant haematologist. We are the first office on the right as you enter the main entrance of the hospital, opposite the security department very close to the blood testing service.
The role of the acute haematology nurse is to help haematology patients at home who are having symptoms/side effects from their disease or treatment. This is an acute service for patients who are feeling unwell.
The Acute Haematology Nurse also helps to facilitate the discharge home of haematology patients after an admission. This ensures that follow up is arranged and that the patient and their carers have access to information and emergency contact numbers before leaving hospital.
