Designated Cancer Centre

As a centre designated for the care of patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers in Ireland our service is designed to provide all patients with rapid assessment in a multi-disciplinary environment. The following features outline this programme:

-          Rapid evaluation clinic for oesophageal and gastric cancers - all patients are seen within one week of us receiving your referral

-          Multi-disciplinary team involvement in the staging and treating cancers

-          Minimally Invasive Surgery – Leading centre in the delivery of minimally invasive surgical approaches to oesophagectomy and gastrectomy. This includes providing

  • Totally Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy
  • Laparoscopic Gastrectomy
  • Laparoscopic Subtotal Gastrectomy

 -           Barrett’s Oesophagus - Specialist gastroenterology and surgical interest in and the management of dysplastic Barrett’s Oesophagus and Early Mucosal Cancers

-          Integrated perioperative care pathway

-          Upper gastrointestinal cancer nurse co-ordinator

-          Upper gastrointestinal data manager

Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery

As well as being a designated cancer centre, surgery is performed for benign upper GI complaints. These include but are not limited to:

  • Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
  • Hernias – abdominal wall and groin hernias: expertise with both open and laparoscopic repair
  • Achalasia – Heller’s Myotomy
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) –anti-reflux surgery for severe heartburn
  • Complex re-operative anti-reflux surgery
  • GIST resection
  • Laparoscopic Splenectomy
  • Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy
