St. Joseph’s Hospital - Speech and Language Therapy

About Speech and Language Therapy

Speech & Language Therapists work with people who present with conditions that affect communication (i.e. speech, language and voice) and swallowing.

There is one senior speech & language therapist based in the Rehabilitation unit in St Joseph’s Hospital. This therapist works only with patients in the Rehabilitation unit.

The main groups of people who avail of this service in St Joseph’s Hospital are over 65 years of age and present with communication and swallowing difficulties associated with stroke, head injury or progressive neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.

Services

Services provided include:

  • The assessment and diagnosis of the communication and/or swallowing impairment. Intensive rehabilitation of communication and/swallowing difficulties if indicated. Therapy may involve direct work with the individual concerned and/or close collaboration with the individual's family and carers in order to explore ways to most effectively support communication and facilitate safe swallowing.
  • The assessment, recommendation and advice with regard to alternative and augmentative communication.
  • The training of individuals (i.e. relatives of patients, health care professionals) on ways to support and maximise communication and swallowing abilities.
