New Respiratory Assessment Unit opens - supporting patients with acute respiratory failure
Tuesday January 26, 2021
A new purpose built Respiratory Assesment Unit (RAU) opened today (Monday 25th Jan) in the old St Martins Ward. Comprising 9 single bedded rooms, initially the RAU will treat patients with COVID-19 presenting with acute respiratory failure and provide advanced respiratory supports, such as non-invasive ventilation. Early specialist respiratory input for patients presenting to ED will support inpatient and ambulatory pathways for COVID-19 care.
Opening the Unit today, Professor Ross Morgan, Consultant Respiratory Physician (left of photo) said that ‘… the Respiratory Assessment Unit will enhance current care pathways for those unwell with COVID-19 presenting to Beaumont Hospital and provide early acute specialist respiratory input". He was joined by colleagues Yvonne Whelan, ADON Respiratory; Dr Emmet O'Brien, Consultant Respiratory Physician; Dr Femi Walkins , Medical Reg & Dr Killian Marsh, Respiratory Reg before welcoming the first patient into the unit.
As the Pandemic subsides and the need for specialist COVID-19 respiratory interventions decreases, over time the unit will provide much needed treatment for lung specific conditions such as COPD, provide specialist oxygen systems, and manage a wide range of respiratory disorders under a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, specialist respiratory nurses, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals.
This unit is a welcome addition to our suite of services to manage a wide range of acute and chronic respiratory conditions in an ambulatory or inpatient setting.
