Beaumont Upper GI Team - Supporting Lollypop Day
Tuesday March 05, 2019
The Upper GI Team hosted an Information Day to mark Annual Lollipop Day on Thursday 28th February.
The early detection of symptoms like difficulty swallowing, persistent indigestion, and reflex/heartburn saves lives. And so does cancer research funded by your lollipop!
One of the initiatives funded from LollIpop Day are bi-annual National Patient Support Group meetings began in 2017 (which include Beaumont patients), that offer information, education and support to Oesophageal cancer survivors. About 450 cases of oesophageal cancer occur in Ireland each year. Approximately 70% of patients have oesophageal cancer symptoms for more than three months before talking to their GP. This awareness day aims to change this - as early detection can be vital in saving lives.
€1000 was raised at this event in Beaumont for the Oesophageal Cancer Fund. The Upper GI Team would like to thank all those who made a donation to this worthy cause and who assisted on the day (especially those who baked the lovely buns!) - the photo shows Wendy Hickey & Claire Coleman, Upper GI Nurse Specialists; Tamseef Anjum, Upper GI SHO, Michelle Hurson and JulieAnne Pereras, S/N Phoenix Ward.
170 people participated in the Oesophageal cancer awareness quiz - a fantastic response. The 3 winners have been notified.
