Joan Heffernan

Ms Joan Heffernan

Biography:  An Inspector Manager in the Regulation (Healthcare) Directorate in the Health Information and Quality Authority. Joan has over 25 years experience working in the healthcare sector both in Ireland and overseas. Having qualified as a paediatric and general nurse, she worked in both the public and private sector as a registered nurse and ward manager. Having completed a Higher Diploma in Quality Healthcare and a Higher Diploma in Healthcare Risk Management, Joan spent six years working as a Clinical Risk Manager in two Dublin maternity hospitals before joining the Health Information and Quality Authority in 2009. Joan has recently completed an MSc in Healthcare Ethics and Law in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Karen Burns

Dr Karen Burns

Biography: Consultant Clinical Microbiologist at Beaumont Hospital and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre since 2010. She graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2000. She is the deputy director of the Hospital’s Microbiology laboratory and leads the Hospital’s antimicrobial stewardship programme. Her interests include; infection surveillance, C. difficile, influenza and the prevention and management of critical care and surgical infections.

Biography: Consultant Nephrologist, General Nephrology and Transplantation Nephrology Beaumont Hospital.

Research Interests: Genetics of kidney disease in the general population, Genetics of familial kidney disease, Stratification of kidney disease risk in the general population, Identification of novel kidney disease biomarkers, Epidemiology of kidney disease in the community, Kidney transplant.

Siobhan Conference

Dr Siobhan MacHale

Biography: Dr Siobhán MacHale MPhil FRCPI FRCP (Edin) FRCPsych is a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist at Beaumont Hospital and Senior Lecturer in the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. As a Consultant in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for 7 years, she developed a particular interest in Psychiatric aspects of Transplantation. She has been delighted to progress with this since her return to Ireland, as a member of the Beaumont Renal Transplant team. She is a founding member of the UK/Ireland Psychological Medicine Transplant group. Today Dr MacHale will speak about Optimising patient adjustment and self care strategies.

Dr Mark Dention & Annette Butler CNM 2

Biography: 

Dr Mark Denton BSc PhD MRCP, Edinburgh University Medical School, Kings College Hospital London and Harvard Medical School Boston.
Ms Annette Butler Annette qualified as a RGN in 2004 from DCU with Beaumont Hospital. She then started working on Hamilton Ward looking after CKD, ESRD, Acute Renals, and Gynae Patients. She gained alot of experience there. She completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Renal Nursing, while working between dialysis, Peters Ward and PD, and completed her Masters in Nephrology Nursing in 2009. She moved full time into Home Therapies and in 2012 became the CNM2.She enjoys giving people the opportunity to be independent with their treatment, and visiting them in their home environment.  She sees the benefits of home therapies on a daily basis.
