Milestones

1987 - Beaumont Hospital opens with Dr. John Lavan as sole Consultant Geriatrician and head of Geriatric Medicine service. Whitworth ward is the designated ward for care of older patients. Services for older patients at The Richmond Hospital, Brunswick Street, and The Charitable Infirmary, Jervis Street, transfer to Beaumont Hospital.

1998 - Dr. John Lavan retires and Dr. Ciaran Donegan is appointed as Consultant Geriatrician.

2001 - Home First Programme commences. This is the first service of home care packages for complex older patients in North Dublin.

2004 - St. Joseph’s Hospital rehabilitation unit opens.

2004 - Dr. Alan Moore is appointed as second Consultant Geriatrician at Beaumont Hospital.

2005 - St. Joseph’s Hospital rehabilitation unit is officially opened by Minister for Health Ms. Mary Harney TD.

2005 - Beaumont Hospital Syncope & ortho-geriatric liaison services commence.

2007 - Beaumont Hospital Memory Clinic commences under the supervision of Dr. Ciaran Donegan & Dr. Mary Cosgrave, Consultant Psychiatrist, in September 2007.

2009 - The Nursing Home State Support Scheme legislation (also known as the Fair Deal Scheme) is introduced in July 2009 and the scheme begins operation later that year on October 27th 2009.

2009 - Professor David Williams appointed as Associate Professor of Medicine at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Medical School.

2009 - Geriatric Medicine curriculum for RCSI medical students launched.

2009 - Beaumont Hospital Acute Stroke Unit is opened on St. Brigid’s ward with 24/7 thrombolysis service run by Departments of Neurology and Geriatric & Stroke Medicine.

2010 - RCSI Education Centre at St. Joseph’s Hospital is opened.

2010 - Clinical Lecturer in Geriatric & Stroke Medicine is appointed by RCSI Medical School.

2010 - Construction of 100-bedded Raheny Community Nursing Unit commences.

2011 - Appointment of Mr. Joseph Morris as Clinical Nurse Specialist.

2012 - Dr. Alan Martin is appointed as Consultant Geriatrician and Outreach Service to Lusk Community Nursing Unit commences in October 2012.

2012 - Raheny Community Nursing Unit is officially opened by Minister for Health Dr. James Reilly TD in November 2012.

2012 - Preparations for Construction of a new Geriatric Medicine Day Hospital at St. Joseph’s Hospital Raheny take place. Completion of construction is expected by 2014.

2014 - Appointment of Dr. Linda Brewer as Consultant Geriatrician.

2014 - June: New Geriatric Medicine Day Hospital building at St. Joseph's Hospital Raheny officially opended by An Taoiseach, Mr. Enda Kenny T.D.
