Fellowship Higher specialist training : Higher Specialist Training in gastroenterology was awarded by RCPI in 2016. 

Karen was also awarded a PhD from RCSI in 2016, studying novel proteasomal targets in colorectal cancer. 

Subsequently, at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Karen was the Ogden-Goldstein Advanced IBD Fellowship recipient in 2016, and the Irving-Gerstein Research Fellowship recipient in 2017.
