Respiratory Medicine

resp logoThe Beaumont Respiratory team are experts in the diagnosis and management of respiratory disease, and provide specialist multidisciplinary care to patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions. The department accepts referrals from both primary and secondary care practitioners.

Beaumont Hospital is a designated lung cancer specialist centre and is a national centre for alpha-one anti-trypsin deficiency (A1AT) , regional (North Leinster) centre of Adult Cystic Fibrosis, and genetic rare lung diseases.

The Respiratory department, through its affiliation with RCSI, holds a proud tradition in research supporting MD and PhD candidates, and post-doctoral researchers, in undertaking high impact translational research. Click here to find out more about research undertaken at Beaumont Hospital.

Outpatient Clinics

Consultant-led respiratory clinics include general respiratory clinics, and subspecialist clinics in lung cancer, lung nodule surveillance, COPD, Asthma, Pregnancy-related lung disease, Cystic Fibrosis, non-CF bronchiectasis, Sleep, neuromuscular disease, non-invasive ventilation, A1AT deficiency, orphan lung diseases, pleural disease and interstitial lung diseases. In addition, there are several Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) clinics held each week in severe asthma, COPD, and lung nodule surveillance and lung cancer survivorship. Pulmonary Function Tests

The following diagnostic tests are carried out in Beaumont Hospital PFT laboratory and the Sleep laboratory (located at St Joseph’s Hospital, Raheny):

  • Spirometry +/- reversibility testing
  • Diffusion capacity measurement
  • FeNO
  • Lung volumes measurement
  • Impulse Oscillometry
  • Bronchial Provocation Tests
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
  • MIP/MEP/SNIP assessment of respiratory muscle function
  • Overnight Oximetry
  • Limited and Full sleep study (St Josephs Hospital, Raheny)
  • Polysomnography (St Josephs Hospital, Raheny)

Endoscopy

Bronchoscopy lists are held on a daily basis. In addition there are several Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) lists per week and a pleural interventions list.
