The Department of Psychology was officially formed in 2002. The Department of Psychology aims to provide high quality, responsive and efficient assessment and treatment services to all our patients.

Dr Niall Pender is Head of the Department of Psychology and Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist. He is a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist and provides a clinical neuropsychology service to the Hospital. His work involves the assessment and management of patients with neurological and neurosurgical illnesses/injuries. He also holds a part-time lectureship at Trinity College Dublin is a Member of the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience and the Irish Institute of Clinical Neuroscience. He is currently President of the Psychological Society of Ireland.

Mark Mulrooney is a Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist in the Psychology Department. His work is mainly attached to Neurology patients with focus on Pre / post surgical patients with Epilepsy and or supportive counselling with patients with this condition. He also provides service to patients with other Neurological conditions including MS, Parkinson's disease and also in the Memory Clinic. He has a particular interest in supporting patients with General Learning Disability attending the Hospital.

Dr Gillian Fortune is a Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist in the Neuroscience Service with both Neurology and Neurosurgery in-patients and outpatients. Her work involves neuropsychological assessment to aid diagnosis or to identify difficulties pre/post surgery, during the course of neurological illness or following brain injury. She also provides therapeutic intervention with specialist training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and rehabilitation advice. She has particular expertise in the neuropsychological assessment of children and in the treatment of non-epileptic attack disorder. Research interests include non epileptic attack disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and neuropsychological outcome following childhood brain injury.

Dr Jennifer Wilson O'Raghallaigh is a Senior Clinical Psychologist on the Liaison Psychiatry Team. She specialises in the assessment and treatment of patients in the hospital who are experiencing significant distress. Jennifer has a background in personality and neuropsychological assessment as well as training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, EMDR and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

Bridann Reidy is a Senior Clinical Psychologist on the Liaison Psychiatry Team, a multi-disciplinary team working with patients referred to the service when background psychological issues may potentially be contributing to their current physical illness/symptoms. Key skills offered to this team include: neuropsychological and developmental assessment; personality assessment; assessment of psychological dysfunction and psychotherapeutic needs; knowledge of psychotherapeutic models.

Dr Ailín O'Dea is a Senior Clinical Psychologist in the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) service and the Living Related Donor Kidney Transplant service. Her work on the CF team involves offering psychological support to people with CF, and psychological assessment where appropriate. Ailín has a particular interest in working jointly with CF patients around issues such as self-care, managing CF treatments and coping with the emotional impact of CF.
The other part of Ailín's post involves meeting with individuals who wish to donate a kidney to a relative or loved one. This involves completing a psychological assessment designed to assess the person's readiness to donate a kidney, as well as offering psychological support to live kidney donors post-transplant where appropriate.

Thelma Graham is a Senior Clinical Psychologist within the Department of Cardiology. Thelma established the first psychological rehabilitation programme for cardiac patients in Ireland. The Cardiac Rehabilitation unit in Beaumont Hospital has gained international recognition for the quality of its service and post-graduate training.

Jonathan Gallagher is a psychologist in the Cardiology Department, where he provides a psychology service to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme. His work ranges from psycho-education to therapeutic intervention for psychology difficulties co-occurring with heart disease. Jonathan has a background in Health Psychology as well as specialist training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing. Areas of interest include: assessment and intervention in cardiac patients; stress management; health beliefs, illness cognitions and health behaviour change; self-management in heart failure.

Dr Jennifer Edgeworth is the Senior Clinical Psychologist with the Psychiatry of Old Age Team, which provides a liaison service to older adults in Beaumont Hospital as well as providing a service in the community. Her work involves neuropsychological assessment to aid diagnosis of dementia and other brain disorders, providing interventions to those with advanced dementia to alleviate distress, psychotherapy, and staff training and consultation.

Dr Aine Connolly is a Clinical Psychologist in the Psychology Department. She is currently attached to the Psychiatry of Old Age Team providing specialist diagnostic and therapeutic services to older adults in community and residential settings. This involves neuropsychological assessment to assist with differential diagnosis of progressive cognitive impairment and psychotherapeutic intervention. She also works with carers and staff around responding to the needs of people with dementia such as behaviour that challenges and offers support to carers and families of people with dementia.

Angela Murphy is a Senior Clinical Psychologist on the Cochlear Implant Programme, working mostly with children with a profound hearing loss and their families. She assesses most children pre surgery to ascertain suitability and inform expectation for post implantation functioning. She also works with children in terms of behavioural and emotional functioning and school performance. She occassionaly sees adults who attend the programme to inform on psycho-social functioning.
