Geriatric Medicine Department
About us
The Department of Geriatric & General Internal Medicine is a multi-disciplinary service offering specialist care to older adults resident in North East Dublin City and North County Dublin.
The department consists of administrative, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, medical social work and medical staff. Department activity is supervised by two Consultant Physicians in Geriatric Medicine and an Associate Professor of Geriatric Medicine. Our interventions are guided by evidence-based practice in each discipline. Close collaborative working exists with allied health care professionals in Psychiatry of Old Age, Neuropsychology and major medical and surgical specialties.
In addition to services at Beaumont Hospital, in-patient care is provided at St. Joseph's Hospital Raheny, The Rockfield Extended Care Unit, Beaumont, and St. Mary's Hospital, Phoenix Park.
Specialty activities include rehabilitation, an out-patient clinic, Day Hospital assessment (including a Vitamin D Clinic and osteoporosis infusion service), syncope assessment with tilt table testing, a Memory Clinic, a Bone Health Service (including in-patient ortho-geriatric liaison and out-patient fracture liaison service) & an in-patient Falls Prevention service. Since the opening of the new Acute Stroke Unit at Beaumont Hospital in November 2009 our department has taken a central role in acute stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) management along with our colleagues in Neurology.
The Department is involved in under graduate and post-graduate teaching, principally of students attending the Royal College of Surgeons and Dublin City University. St. Joseph's Hospital is an examination centre for the Diploma in Medicine for the Elderly run by the Royal College of Physicians.
Research and audit activity takes place, including collaboration in national and regional activity (Irish National Audit of Stroke Care, The North Dublin Populations Stroke Study and the Irish National Hip Fracture Audit Database) and is focussed on a number of areas of specific interest including dementia, stroke, rehabilitation, falls, syncope and osteoporosis.
