Irish National CJD Surveillance Unit (INCJDSU) in Beaumont Hospital

CJD

Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease (CJD) affects approximately 10 people each year in Ireland. It is progressive, untreatable and ultimately fatal. Based in Beaumont Hospital, the INCJDSU provides both diagnostic and surveillance services to physicians across Ireland caring for patients with CJD.

Recent improvements to our service include the introduction of a CJD MDT Committee providing a second opinion on Clinical and Neuroradiological findings when requested. 2022 will see the introduction of in house RT-QuIC testing of cerebrospinal fluid for patients with Sporadic CJD; the most common (85%), spontaneously occurring, prion disease.
