Research into Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD)

About the COPD Service 

Since it’s inception in 2001, Beaumont Hospital’s COPD outreach service has been recognised as an innovative service, winning awards, publishing articles, and presenting at national and international conferences. The COPD Outreach service comprises of Early Discharge, Assisted Discharge and Pulmonary Rehabilitation programmes based on international guidelines.

The COPD Outreach department is the first such venture in Ireland and was developed by Professor Richard Costello. It is a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and is staffed by Ms. Brenda Deering, Senior Physiotherapist/Co-ordinator, and Ms. Niamh McCormack, CNMII.

  • Over the past year, ethical approval has been obtained to pursue two further studies at Master’s of Science level. Both these studies have been transcribed for master’s dissertation, have been presented in poster format at peer-reviewed conferences and have been submitted in abstract format for possible article publishing in research journals.
    • Acupuncture as an adjunct to standard treatment for COPD patients in pulmonary rehabilitation.
    • Sustained improvement and gender differences using the SenseWare® activity monitor/ armbands.
