Preventing and Protecting Against the Flu
Background
On the 11h June 2009, the World Health Organisation (WHO) raised the Influenza A(H1N1) pandemic alert to Phase 6. This in effect declares a pandemic. A pandemic means that an influenza virus, new to humans, is spreading and causing disease in many parts of the world.
What you can do
Swineflu.ie is an HSE website that has information that can help you prevent the Influenza A(H1N1) virus transmission and protect yourself and others. To prevent the spread of infections in general, please follow good hand and respiratory hygiene practices:
When coughing or sneezing:
- Turn your head away from others.
- Use a tissue to cover your nose and mouth.
Dispose of the tissue afterwards in a waste bin.
Decontaminate your hands after discarding the tissue. Use soap and water or alcohol gel for at least 15 seconds.
If you get the flu
If you get Influenza, please do not attend our Emergency Department. Stay at home and contact your GP or call the Flu Information Line Freephone 1800 94 11 00. That phone number provides recorded information on how to recognise the symptoms of Influenza A(H1N1), what to do if you or someone in your family gets sick, and how you can care for someone at home call.
Visiting Beaumont
If you have any of the signs or symptoms of the flu, please do not visit the Hospital. Please see our visiting guidelines.
